LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

What We Know About Harleysville

Harleysville was farm country, settled by Pennsylvania Dutch families around 1700, and turned from an agricultural village into a suburb after the Second World War. The history is still here — the 1843 Klein Meetinghouse, the Dielman Kolb Homestead from 1717, and the Mennonite Heritage Center.

Across Lower Salford Township, about two-thirds of homes are single-family detached, with a real share of twins and townhomes and several 55+ communities, including Arbour Square, Parkview at Oakcrest and Salford Mill.

GOOD TO KNOW

Septic is still part of life out here

Lower Salford runs an on-lot sewage program: anyone on a septic system has to have the tank pumped at least every three years. If you’re on one, what goes down your drains matters a lot more than it does on public sewer.
